Last year, MCS Coca-Cola LLC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National University of Mongolia (NUM) to establish a broad-based partnership. One of the three key areas of collaboration under the agreement is to support the university’s five-year strategic plan by creating an environmentally friendly campus aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As part of this initiative, MCS Coca-Cola, in partnership with TML Plastic Recycling Plant, is launching the “Recycling Champion” competition to encourage students, faculty, and staff to develop the habit of sorting and recycling their waste.

The National University of Mongolia comprises more than 10 academic buildings, research institutes, and libraries, serving approximately 25,000 students and 1,500 faculty and staff. To establish a long-term plastic waste sorting culture across the university, MCS Coca-Cola is working closely with NUM’s Office of Cooperation, Facilities and Services Division, and Student Associations to implement the following initiatives:

1. Dedicated plastic recycling bins have been installed in each academic building since last year, making it easier for students and staff to sort their plastic waste at the source.

2. A series of training sessions is being conducted to educate participants on proper plastic waste sorting practices and to introduce them to the recycling process through visits to the TML Plastic Recycling Plant.

3. As part of the “Recycling Champion” competition, every Wednesday, TML Plastic Recycling Plant collects used plastic water and beverage bottles from five designated collection points across the university using its dedicated collection vehicle.

The “Recycling Champion” competition will continue until May 15, with the goal of establishing a comprehensive system for waste separation, collection, and transportation throughout the university.

MCS Coca-Cola has committed to collecting and recycling the equivalent of 100% of the packaging it sells by 2030. Supporting this commitment, the TML Plastic Recycling Plant, established through the company’s initiative, currently collects plastic water and beverage bottles directly from more than 1,610 apartment complexes and businesses across Mongolia for recycling.

How to Sort Plastic Correctly?

As an interesting fact, the bottles collected through proper sorting are recycled in Mongolia and transformed into raw material for Bonaqua, the first brand in Mongolia to use bottles made from 100% locally recycled PET plastic.

Anyone who wishes to contribute to protecting the environment can contact the TML Plastic Recycling Plant’s Collection Department at 7610-7711 to arrange plastic collection and recycling.
